Late Night Laments

(Inside Out)

8/10

Casting a warm glow upon these twilit compositions, Late Night Laments carries the musical torch from where Bowness’ previous releases alighted.

The mundanities of everyday existence are superbly revealed in the impeccable narratives conjured from Bowness’ fertile imagination.

As an acquired taste worth savouring, drole and dark humour permeates his songcraft starting with Northern Rain. Song stories such as a children’s storyteller who commits suicide, plus titles like The Hitman Who Missed resound with the disc-location of post-modern life buoyed by a spectral mix from his fellow No-Man collaborator Steven Wilson.

Coming in just short of forty minutes, yet similar to a long, slow lockdown read, Late Night Laments demands a patient ear and a persevering mind which are sated by these sharp and absorbing claustrophobic observations all deeply rendered by enthralling atmospheric electronic soundscapes.
