John Stoddart - "Photographer to the Stars". A profile.
John Stoddart - "Photographer to the Stars".
Renowned photographer John Stoddart is recognised as one of the world’s most sophisticated image creators. In fact, his name is a byword for class. Known as “the photographer to the stars”, he has shot numerous glamorous celebrities such as Daniel Craig, Piers Brosnan, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Sir Anthony Hopkins, also big-name bands and artists including The Rolling Stones, Luciano Pavarotti and Sinead O’Connor.
A passion for photography began during his military service in the ’70s, his then ‘hobby’ of shooting pictures of his fellow troops took him on a starry path into a full-time professional photographic career. Inspired by master photographers that included Richard Avedon and Arthur Fellig, (”Weegee”), he perfected his urbane style and approach to the timeless images of his subjects.
Jumping forward a decade, the 80s found John commissioned by every major record label band and artist, thus creating his legend as a “photographer to the stars”. He also shot for major publications and international brands: Vogue, Harper’s, Esquire, EMI, and Virgin and is cited for bringing a deft glamour to popular culture.
His preference for working with film carries over to the printing process and his collection of bygone era cameras. As an artist, his work captures the essence of his subjects and the story behind the picture. I’ve seen first-hand John’s celebrated working methods at both Esquire and Q magazines. John is an event wherever his camera continues to take him.
